Vista on the Network

Windows Vista Desktop

Windows Vista Desktop

So I’m playing with Vista Enterprise Edition on my laptop right now.  And by “playing” I mean seeing how it runs on our networks.  So far there are some problems with the way it interacts with Small Business Server (it won’t run the login/out scripts) but that’s not the end of the world.

Of course I had to manually map our network drives, again not a big deal, but when it has to be done for everybody by hand it will be a big deal.

Network printers are kind of a pain because none of them have Vista drivers installed.  So I downloaded the Vista x64 driver for the Dell 3010cn that is right outside of my office and just shoot straight to it now instead of going through a print server.  Also, I’m having some program compatibility issues, but only out of the poorly written programs like CDM+ Pro.  I had to run it in backwards compatibility because, well, it’s CDM.

BTW, I’m digging the Aero…scrolling through multiple windows, opaque settings…all of it is very visually appealling.  I also like the Gadgets sidebar.  There are plenty of Gadgets to download that are useful.  Yes, the screenshot above shows my dual monitors…sweetness!

I’m talking mostly aesthetics right now, but the security features are incredible.  More on the tech side of the Vista deployment later.  And no Kurt, you cannot have Vista yet.  We have to run it on our network (yes, I’m the guinea pig) for a while before it gets pushed out to the rest of the clients.

I just got my new Dell last night with Vista. So far, so good! Of course, I’m not doing anything like running a network on it. I do like the sidebar features and other aesthetic improvements. My biggest question is how will my favorite OS software run on it?

No remember Im not in a hurry to get it! Too many programs to get updates with and too much stress in my life right now to add it!!! Sheesh

I got my Vista last Wednesday. Cool interface, but the security seems to be getting in my way by asking too many questions and not loading programs I want to load with no work arounds.

Also, it won’t let me send em on Office 2000 (yes I know it’s old, but it’s supposed to be compatible…I think)

Also, you can’t “reply” or “forward” em accessed through Outlook via the web (my work em). It just gives my a red x. (How’s that for friendly) It appears to be a known issue.

Yes, it’s cool, but it’d be nice to be able to communicate on outbound em. ;-)

(PS…Matt, I’m at Ava Roasteria right now with a speed of only 194 Kb/Sec…which is way slower than when I’ve ever been here before. For the record, the Bvtn Library is 931 Kb/Sec…but I don’t think they serve tea there. :-)

I got vista 6 months ago…I mean OS X. :) I dont blame MS for copying apple. But on a non-biased note. Aero is slick. However, I find it odd that vista does not intergrate with other MS products. After 3-4 years you would think they would have made it near perfect.

Paul, I almost knew word for word what you were going to say! LOL…I just know you too well buddy.

You’re zeal for OS X is almost as bad as the hicks that like to fight over “Chevy vs Ford”. Ha ha! Take that, Mac lover!

O matt. I remember you being very impressed with my Macbook. And it already has those security features built in. Touché. Just wait til you see 10.5. You will be sad. It’s ok thou. People did not think the internet would catch on either. It is kinda like people who still use hotmail when we all know gmail is better.
