Digicide

I thought maybe I made that word up...digicide...but a quick Google search shows it to be quite popular.  At any rate, I'm sticking with it.

What is my definition of digicide?  The death of multiple digital devices or service all within a short time span.  It's happening to me, digicide is impacting me big time.

It started off innocently enough two nights ago, when my Xbox360 wouldn't pick up an IP address from my router.  Not a huge deal, but I was slightly panicked because I was streaming my recording of The Office season finale from my Vista Media Center.  No IP = no connection to MCE.  After multiple restarts I just applied the IP manually and it worked.

Yesterday my Outlook blew up.  It completely stopped connecting to Exchange.  This did cause panic...I use Outlook about as often as I use my lungs.  So no Outlook = digital asphyxiation.  I tried EVERYTHING I could think of.  After a full day of messing around, and multiple restarts/reinstalls/re-everythings I had to do a FULL wipe of Outlook including all registry values and any "hidden" app information.  Finally it started connecting to Exchange again.

This morning on my drive into work my phone stopped picking up a signal from Cingular.  I use my phone MORE than I use Outlook, so this is not a good thing.  Yes, my service is up and running (I called my phone and it went to voicemail after several rings, and my wife's phone that is on the same account works great), I have restarted multiple times, and I have even pulled the battery and SIM card.  Nothing.  It's searching for a signal as if I'm standing on a remote island in Fiji.  Not good.  Before I have an aneurysm I'm going to just give it a bit of time, but if it doesn't magically fix itself in a couple of hours I will go down to the local Cingular (AT&T) store and gently ask for assistance.

I wonder what is next on my list of digital service to succumb to the digicide?

The Dip

I am leaving tomorrow to attend the Dynamic Church Conference in Dallas, Texas.  I was hoping to have a little time to catch up on my reading (probably on the flight down), and that thought had barely processed when I saw a package from Amazon in my mailbox. I am now the proud owner of "The Dip" by Seth Godin.  I can't wait to read it! At 76 small pages, I'm sure I'll finish. BTW, I love the acknowledgments in the back of the book.  It reads:
This book is really short.  Short books are hard to write, but you made me do it.  My readers are excellent correspondents, and this is something I've learned from them along the way: Write less.
Brilliant!  I'll write up a full review when I have a chance.

Tweak: Add Your Latest Blog Post To Your Email Signature

I just installed a cool little tweak called BlogSig, and so far I think it's pretty neat.  Do you use a signature line in Outlook?  Probably.  So do I.  At the bottom it used to say "Blog: www.mattsingley.com" but now it says "Check out my latest entry: Dynamic Church Conference".  And guess what?  After I publish this post, my signature will automatically change to reflect the title of the most recent post.  Pretty cool, I think. BlogSig is a free app and appears to be on the up and up.  It passed my virus and malware scan okay, and with about five minutes worth of setup and adjusting what I wanted it to say I was ready to go.  The premise is simple...it's an add-in for your email that subscribes to your blog's RSS feed and then publishes the title of the most recent post in your signature.  Simple.  Brilliant! You non-Microsoft readers...don't loose heart!  There is also a full Mac version!  And here is the super-cool part...it also works for GMail, Yahoo Mail and Hotmail! Check it out today, here is the link to downloadLet me know what you think...

Tweak: KatMouse Download

I'm always looking for tools to make my life a little easier, a little faster.  Anything I can do to shave a few seconds off a task that I do over and over is a good thing in my book.

Enter KatMouse...a tiny little app that tweaks the way your mouse cursor works. You know how the scroll wheel in your mouse only scroll down whatever window is active?  With KatMouse you can just hover over a window (Internet Explorer, Outlook, etc) and scroll down without clicking the window to make it "live".  I love that!

After a long day like today, a little tweak like KatMouse is just what I need.  You can download it here.  Best of all, it's free!

Here is a description in their own words:

The prime purpose of the KatMouse utility is to enhance the functionality of mice with a scroll wheel, offering 'universal' scrolling: moving the mouse wheel will scroll the window directly beneath the mouse cursor (not the one with the keyboard focus, which is default on Windows OSes). This is a major increase in the usefulness of the mouse wheel.

Another feature involves the wheel button. Since the wheel button is not consistently used in Windows, KatMouse can use it for a kind of task switching: with a click of the wheel button you can push a window to the bottom of the stack of windows that is your desktop, making a recovered window the active window.
