AT&T, iPhones and Big Brother

It’s too late for me, save yourselves.  I recently bought the AT&T 8525 (which I do love), but I’m struggling with the corporate big brotherness of AT&T.

This article lays it out pretty clearly…they ARE watching what you download.  They WILL find you.

"AT&T is going to act like the copyright police, and that is going to make customers angry," she said. "The good news for AT&T is that there’s so little competition that where else are the customers going to go?"

So…you iPhone junkies that are just about to drop 6 bills to get the ultra-slick squawk box…does this information slow you down at all?

BTW, I use Zune Marketplace for ALL of my downloads, so I get everything I want legally and quickly.  This policy doesn’t personally affect me, but I am POSITIVE it will affect some of my readers.  You know who you are. ;)

As much of a techie as I am these days, I don’t desire a phone that doubles as a media player and internet browser. The iPhone looks cool, I’m just not sure it’s for me. I tried doing the PDA thing a few years ago and was just never able to justify it in terms of personal and professional productivity and connection. I’m perfectly with my iPod Shuffle (all 512M), my cell phone, and my new Dell notebook. Then again, maybe I’m just 40 and I’m turning into one of those people who just don’t get it.

Like most things Apple these days, iPhone looks super cool in the ads, it is being shrouded in secrecy until the launch, and it is creating immense techno-lust. Apple has not had a strikeout in several times at bat since Jobs returned, so maybe they have overreached this time. One of the biggest challenges is the lack of a physical keyboard on the device. Soft keyboards are famous for being hard for people to get used to. We’ll see…

This all started when I could no longer get “8 Tracks” for my John Deere and I paid a hard earned 18 bucks for that player too.

I was in the Cingular store about an hour ago. I asked the clerk if there was a lot of buzz about the iPhone. He said “plenty of buzz, not too many customers”. He indicated that the people he talked with thought the phone sounded “cool” but were unlikely to buy it for a variety of reasons. Personally, I wish it success!

sorry, as much as i’d like to have an iphone ( this device is going to have a huge impact and influence and change the market significantly ), the idea of using big brother AT&T is too much of an issue for me. i’ll wait til either i can buy an unlocked iphone or it opens up to other carriers.
