Case Study: Best Buy Uses Social Media To Crowdsource Employees

Just saw a great video by Best Buy about using the company as a wiki.  That is, using tools (many of them social media) to crowd source your employees thoughts and ideas.  I think this is brilliant.  I’ve already tweeted about research that shows that employees that engage in social media are more productive, but it appears that Best Buy is taking it one step further.

Let Employees Use Social Media

Let Employees Use Social Media

They asked “how do you actually get people’s voices into our most important decisions?”  I don’t know how much of this is just for show, or how much they are truly embracing the concept of employees offering as much or more to strategic decisions as executive level talent, but I like where this is heading.

If you own, manage or consult for a company (that should be about 92% of you) then take the time to watch this 4:32 video and ask yourself how you can apply some of these concepts to your situation.

Great share Matt – will help with a project I’m working on. Thanks.

Very cool. Thanks for sharing this video. We’re designing new offices and intend to install flat screens that broadcast employee comments, marketing results, daily client activities and shout outs. It’s a low-level communcation tool, but this BB wiki is inspiring. Cheers, K

@Ken…Wow…what you are doing sounds incredible! When it’s completed would you let me know? I would like to hear how it is received, maybe even see a pic or two?

This was awesome to watch… it was neat to see Don Tapscott on the interview; the excerpt about ‘building a fancy playground’ (initial speedbumps in the Geek Squad’s foray into collaborative networking) from Wikinomics will be forever imprinted in my mind!

I’d love to learn more about how companies – especially the large ones – have been able to implement these crowdsourcing activities. What were the major wins that helped move these new approaches into the culture?

Matt, Like Chris this video gave me some great ideas for a project at CBI. I am helping the organization step into Social Media and to see a place like Best Buy creating an environment where employees are not only feeling useful but really are was great.
    Thanks for sharing.
