operation-smileWhen Adventure Girl Stef Michaels invited me to the 140 Smiles event I knew I couldn’t say no.  140 Smiles is the official pre-event for TWTRCON and is designed to raise money and awarenes for Operation Smile, a 501(c)3 organization that helps children all around the world.  I’m going to ask for your help with this (just scroll down a little if you want to get right to it), but wanted to share with you a blurb about what this great organization does.

Since its founding, Operation Smile volunteers have treated more than 130,000 children born with cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities and the organization has a presence in 51 countries. In addition to contributing free medical treatment, Operation Smile trains local medical professionals in its partner countries and leaves behind crucial equipment to lay the groundwork for long-term self-sufficiency.

To know me at all is to know that I am extremely sympathetic to groups like this and have personally worked to help people (particularly children) around the world in different ways for most of my life.  I know that most of you feel the same way, so I want to ask you for your help.  It’s really quite simple, you’ll make a huge difference and you get to play around with Twitter! What could be better?

Here is what you do, it’s quick and easy:

  1. Go to 140smiles.org between 7-9pm (West Coast time folks…) and click on the “Donate” button in the top left
  2. You will be taken to the donation page (direct link here), please select $20 or more.
  3. Be sure that for the field that asks for your Twitter Team Name you type MATTSINGLEY so we can track donations. By the way, since Operation Smile is a registered 501(c)3, every dollar you donate is completely tax deductible!
  4. Once you check out, Tweet it, Facebook it or just email your friends and ask them to help too. Let’s change some smiles!

For every $240 we raise, one child will have a life-transforming operation that will change the way they look at life…and the way others look at them.  I really can’t imagine what it would be like to grow up with a cleft lip, and I want to do whatever I can to help.  This community…you, me and everybody else that we are linked to via this blog, Facebook, Twitter and in real life…has the ability to change that RIGHT NOW.  Please log in to 140Smiles tonight and let’s make a huge difference.  I’ll put up reminders on Twitter and Facebook, and heck…I may even hit some of you up via old fashioned email. ;)  If you have questions or comments, @me on Twitter and I’ll get back to you.  Thanks everyone!  I’m going to leave you with this powerful video.  It’s over 8 minutes long, but well worth the time.

[...] had any interaction with them personally (AdventureGirl tells me I just missed them at the 140Smiles party IRL), this is incredibly important for companies and Virgin gets it.

I def love their airline. The one fail I noticed was the touchscreens. They seem to be horrible. I just flew LAX to JFK this weekend and had numerous touchscreen fails. The passenger behind you is probably tapping away too hard which bothers you if you’re trying to sleep. On the other hand, I don’t blame the passenger behind me because I myself tried normal activity like changing channels, ordering food, movies….most of my touches didn’t register. Wish they’d upgrade those screens or software. Also, the video games are pretty old school graphics and offering.

Thanks for the upgrade tips, I’ll try those, although my upgrades online from coach to first class are more like $129 coach airfare that turns into $1049 for first class (or $550 for Select). Somehow I doubt it will be a $50 upgrade when I get to the airport but I’ll check and see how low they go.

Wow, thank for the review. I am stuck with American Airlines, they totally SUCK!! Since there are many things I hate, I will just mention the old, old, old planes with horrible seats.

However, they got me with the miles! There is no escape for me from AA!

I have heard a lot of fantastic things about Virgin America lately- I’m looking forward to travelling with them. I’ve seen other airlines step up their game, too. While it’s inevitable, the ability to connect during a flight, which can already take up most of your day, is a great feature, especially for online marketers.
