Geodelic: The Future is Location Based Services

geodelicRemember the movie Minority Report with Tom Cruise?  There were some creepy, big brother themes throughout, but there were also some very cool things like billboards that interacted with the characters. “John Anderton, you could use a Guinness right now”, chimed the advertisement at Cruise’s character as he went by.  I actually remember my thought upon seeing that part, “wow, that is the future, and I don’t think it’s a stretch to think it will be soon…and I’m excited for it!”  Just a few years later I’m seeing technology created that is wonderful and amazing; that good kind of interaction is coming!

Geodelic is a company that I became aware of earlier this year, and as I tracked whatever information I could find about them I was amazed at what they were doing: creating mobile applications that interact with users in a very non-traditional and non-intrusive way! The idea seems simple enough, but the execution is extraordinary…help users find things they need that are nearby. If I’m walking around the Santa Monica Third Street Promenade the Geodelic app will help me find food I like (and maybe offer me a drink special), shops I want to visit (and maybe give me a percentage off my purchase) and locations that will be of interest to me.  T-Mobile has put the Geodelic engine at the center of its new phone, myTouch 3G, and very aptly named it “Sherpa”.  Like a traditional Sherpa, it does the heavy lifting and gets you where you need to go. I love this idea.

Given all of this, you can imagine how excited I am to be helping the Geodelic team with social media interaction! I’ve traditionally only worked with companies or individuals that I really believe in, and when it comes to Geodelic I am really into what they are doing.  My Twitter bio has always said, “The future is mobile” and I truly believe that.  I’m so excited about this because I want to help get the word out about a service that is going to make your life a whole lot easier, and frankly the “super cool” factor of Geodelic just can’t be overlooked. I will be working in an official capacity for Geodelic, so you’ll likely see a lot of information about what is (and what will be) coming from my various outlets.  I would love to hear your thoughts about what you think this new location-based-services way of life will mean not only to you, but to society in general.

Keep your eye out for big things to come out of Geodelic, and please make sure to follow the corporate account on Twitter.  I’ll be spending plenty of time there, along with the rest of the Geodelic team. Don’t forget to check out our Facebook page too!  If you want to check out some of the cool things from Geodelic, here is a great ABC News interview with Autumn Radtke, this is a very nice write up on the Huffington Post by Geodelic founder Rahul Sonnad, and below is a short 1:25 video from CNET that goes through the features of the T-Mobile myTouch 3G.

Sounds pretty cool. I have been waiting for the location based advertising to start showing up more in the apps on Android, haven’t really seen that tapped yet.
