Twitter Mass Suspends Accounts

Twitter Suspensions Are Global

Twitter Suspensions Are Global

UPDATE:  I spoke to the fine folks at Mashable, they did a good write up here.  Also, the official Twitter Status Blog has an update, blames the suspensions on “human error” and they are working to restore everything.

I reported last week that my Twitter account was suspended, but it appeared to be isolated to me and wasn’t wide sweeping.  Twitter was very quick to get me up and running, and their official explanation was:

At some point, a botnet tried to push out some of your updates as their own. This means that when we took out the botnet, you went with ‘em. You’re back, and you should be safe from now on.

Today more suspensions are sweeping through Twitter, and even though my account was suspended again it wasn’t just isolated to me.  In fact it was so rampant in the early afternoon that it started to trend as a hot topic.  The suspensions have hit small accounts and large alike, and don’t seem to have a preference for who you are or what you do.  Corporately I’m aware of both Blockbuster (@blockbuster) and a section of the L.A. Times (@latimestot) getting taken out, privately it ranged from myself to Kim Sherrell to ModelSupplies and everyone in between.

As of right now there is not an official explanation from Twitter, although several folks on the consumer side have mentioned a “spam cloud”.  I’ve never heard of such a thing so I can’t tell you what that means, but a lot of people are being affected.  I see some credible speculation that those who use an auto-follow service (which I do from time to time) have been most affected, but as of right now this is only speculation.

If your Twitter account is suspended and you’re not sure why, follow these steps:

  • Fill out a support request.  You can do so on the official Twitter support page, you will be assigned a number.  Keep it, and be sure to check in to see how things are going.
  • Make sure you have a backup account.  Much of my work depends on me being able to communicate via Twitter, so I have a backup account, @singley.  I recommend that you create a backup account too so that you can at least get your voice out there and talk to people if you need to.
  • Pay attention to trends.  If you look at Twitscoop you can a pretty good idea that this is a broad reaching issue.  If this does nothing else, you know you’re not crazy and other people are affected by it too.
  • Be patient.  I know, I know…it’s tough.  Believe me, I know.  Once you submit your support request, try to enjoy life and check back in the next day.
  • Don’t create “bring back so and so” campaigns.  I’ve seen a lot of “bring back” campaigns fire up on Twitter today, and all that does is clog the channels of communication to the folks that are trying to help, and there just aren’t very many of them…not enough to sort the signal from the noise of massive amounts of retweets. I would tell you who those people are, but then they would be swarmed with even more noise, so I’ll do my part to be a good citizen and keep their names off here.
  • Sign below! I want to get an idea of how many people are affected, OR sign on their behalf since they may not be on Twitter right now so can’t see this request.

I’m glad to see that it’s just not me… however it’s very frustrating. I submitted a support request over 2 hours ago and it has yet to be assigned to anyone yet! It’s not like I can’t run my business without Twitter, but it sure is helpful. Lori

Actually, the support request link was removed. But it still exists: http://twitter.zendesk.com/requests/portal/new

I was caught in the whole spammer net that Twitter has launched. I do have a personal account and my business account (business is the one suspended) so I am not 100% down but my business is hosting/MCing a live video teleconference tomorrow and I was going to use twitter to remind people of that event.

Thanks for the article and update. I am currently suspended. Have been assigned but nothing but an automated reply. I see @delbius from @spam sent out an update a 10 minutes ago stating…. “Heading home to clean things up. Movie was good, expect things on Twitter to be back to normal in prob 4 hours or so”
Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.

My account was suspended this afternoon sometime between 3 and 4: @tylerbraun.

Luckily it was brought back to life late tonight. I never got a reply to my email as to why it was suspended.

Much to my surprise I was suspended yesterday and am back up today. No explanation and I don’t expect any. Sounds like growing pains to me.

Happened to me as well but thankfully they’ve restored the account. This is worrisome because I depend on Twitter to keep in touch with colleagues and what’s happening in my industry. I love Twitter but this has certainly made me re-think my dependence on the platform as a serious communication tool. They’re doing a great job but this was troublesome nonetheless.

My friend @hank_phillippi had her account suspended, even though she didn’t break any rules, and is new to Twitter, so I’m afraid she’ll just get disillusioned by this

yep, i had two of my three accounts suspended and here is the message I received from twitter support

“we resolved a number of issues last night that could have led to this (see status.twitter.com).”

back to normal again and you can find and follow me again @colorexpert

After 3 days, its finally being processed. Now, just not sure when the will reactivate me.

I think they have a revenue model now for Twitter. I would be willing to pay for a reasonable monthly service around 7.99-14.99 for guaranteed up-time, verification & customer service… even in Chat form.

PLEASE PLEASE turn me back on ASAP Twitter.

My account has been suspended too, earlier today, and I still can’t find a really valid reason for that. Request sent, all I can do now is .. wait. And hope :/

I had only been on Twitter a few weeks. I’m suspended and I know I am not a spammer. I follow almost the same number which follow me. Pretty much all are craft and sewing interests. I’ve read the rules and do not believe I broke them. I wish I knew If I did something to cause this.
