This is one of the best posts I’ve read about the state of where we are now. And putting it in the context of those long-ago meetings really gives it perspective. I, too, sat in many such meetings. It was like pulling teeth to get companies to invest in the Internet back then.
So very much of the same skepticism and dismissal of places like Twitter and Facebook today. They just don’t get it. Mostly, they don’t get what a HUGE sea change is happening. (Even bigger right now, I’d say, than previously.)
And I think that’s why everyone (well, so many) are perplexed right now, cause they can’t figure out what the frack is really happening.
Ah, hindsight is a wonderful thing, no?
10 years ago, spending more money on a Yellow Pages ad probably did result in more sales, depending on the company in question and their target market.
It’s easy to simplify the issue as “Haha! Silly old codger. Live in the now, man.” Remember the dot-bomb? A lot of people spent big on the Internet back then, and lost big.
Show me the numbers. Show me the SCIENCE! Prove I’ll make more money if I buy your pet form of advertising, and maybe I’ll spend my money with you. This applies to print, TV, radio, websites *and* twitter et al.
“But it’s so coool!” doesn’t cut it. This is Serious Business, after all.
