Zune HD Goes Social

Zune HD deviceZune, the mobile music device from Microsoft, is starting to heat up in the world of social media with the Zune HD giveway sweepstakes.  Considering the very social nature of the Zune track sharing, it’s good to see this happening.

If you’re been around these parts for long, at some point or another you’ve heard me talk about my love of the Zune.  I’m usually met with responses like, “oh, so you’re the guy that bought one!” and other cheeky remarks. All in good fun, but my math is still solid and with as much music as I download, I simply could not afford to own an iPod. I’m particularly excited for the release of the Zune HD, it looks incredible even to most Apple Fanboys that I talk to.  You can look at the hardware specs and drool over the 16:9 OLED screen here.

Zune HD usersThe social aspect of what Zune is doing to promote the new HD device is pretty good for a campaign.  There are three ways to “enter” the sweepstakes, via Twitter, Facebook and MySpace.  In each of these spaces you need to just put up a message about what you think your favorite upcoming feature of the Zune HD will be.  With Twitter, the other stipulation is that you allow Zune to put their color overlay on your Avatar, which they do easily and automatically via OAuth here. This appears to be working, when I logged into my computer this morning “Zune” was the top trend on Twitscoop!

I think this is a great use of social media to get the word out about a product.  Create an action item (an easy one…can’t involve too many step), let the user decide the general content, and give them a great reward! You can find the full list of rules of the sweetstakes here, so go check it out an enter!
