The Stats On Internet Pornography

I think everybody knows that pornography is amazingly prevalent on the internet, but sometimes it takes an infograph to really put it in perspective.  Personally, I wish these statistics weren’t so extraordinary, but unfortunately they are, and it is news worthy.  I’m writing about this here because I’m seeing more and more pornography (spam and otherwise) being shared within social networks and I think it’s only going to get worse.

Check out the info-graphic below (I usually call these things data porn, but somehow it just seems a little too pointed in this case), among other things you’ll see that:

  • The average age at which a child first sees pornography online is 11
  • 20% of men and 13% of women fess up to watching porn online at work
  • 35% of all internet downloads are pornograph

It’s kind of sad that this is the case. Yet in many ways it’s not that surprising. However, I knew Porn on the Internet was big but I didn’t realize how big it truly was. That was a bit of a shocker.

I’m not sure I get what is so sad about this, really. Everyone says that it’s sad… why? It’s just porn, and sex. But then again I don’t place that much importance on it as most do. Not saying I run around and sleep with everyone, but more like I can live without it. However, I don’t really care what others do with their lives, if they wanna look at porn all day, who cares? Who are they hurting? Sure, some people may take it too far and ruin their relationship with someone else but that is their issues to work out. It’s interesting to see it on an info-graphic, but I’m finding it difficult to understand what is sad about it.

Actually, I just realized the sad part… that people actually pay for something that is widely free all over the internet if they look right. Lol

Quit demonizing sex. There is nothing “sad” about sex and it shouldn’t be made to sound like it will get “worse”. Why are people so offended by our natural attraction to each other? There are only a few stats on the chart worth worrying about.

Hi Benjamin, I certainly don’t demonize sex, I think it’s a natural and beautiful part of life and I’m thankful for it. Pornography isn’t sex, however. It may contain sexuality, but pornography itself is not natural or beautiful. Have you ever personally known somebody in the industry? I have. She left after many years of being an incredibly high profile adult movie star, and to this day is far less than an emotionally stable person. THAT IS SAD.

Tell me why this doesn’t really surprise me?

  • garvamatic

    yeah, but so WHAT?
all the numbers are meaningless without a point of comparison, such as how many people look up recipes per day, how many admit to using lolcats at work, is it true that most people use wikipedia on a sunday, what’s the ratio between porn purchases and amazon.com etc etc. it’s a big web out there. there’s lots of people doing lots of stuff. that some or maybe even a lot of that stuff is pornography is hardly newsworthy without some context.
